Herbert Pocket a. Pip 's best friend, Herbert is compassionate, honest, and unpretentious. He and Pip live together in London where he works in a counting house, then as a merchant. He cheerfully helps Pip through all of Pip's struggles.
Pip secretly invests in Herbert's career to help Herbert succeed as a merchant. A famous lawyer in London, Mr. Jaggers is Pip 's guardian and the middleman between him and his patron. Jaggers also works for Miss Havisham. He is rational, sharp-minded, and intimidating. He prides himself on neither expressing nor responding to human emotion.
Pumblechook a. Uncle Pumblechook. A corn and seed merchant and Joe 's uncle, Mr. Pumblechook is superficial, calculating, and false. He takes undue credit for parenting Pip. Originally Joe 's journeyman, Orlick is devious and violently vengeful. He resents Pip , whom he blames for all of his problems.
Bentley Drummle studies with Pip. He is a wealthy heir to a baronetcy, upper class according to the old system of inherited rank. Described as "idle, proud…and suspicious," Drummle is Pip's nemesis. He pursues Estella.
Startop studies with Pip. Though spoiled by an overprotective mother, Startop is a good-natured and helpful friend. Miss Havisham 's cousin, Herbert 's father, and Pip 's tutor, Matthew Pocket is honorable, upstanding, and kind. Upset beyond words, Pip walks the whole way back to London.
Afraid, Pip spends a night at a seedy inn called the Hummums. Herbert and Pip discuss a plan to sneak Magwitch away on the river, and Pip begins to consider staying with his benefactor even after their escape. Pip buys a rowboat, keeping a nervous watch for the dark figure searching for Magwitch. Throughout these chapters, Pip is again caught between powerful and conflicting feelings.
When Joe visited London in Chapter 27 , Pip was afraid both of how Joe would see his new life and of how the people in his new life would see Joe. Interestingly, when Pip goes to break off his relations with Estella and Miss Havisham in Chapter 44 , only to find that Estella has abandoned him to marry Drummle, Miss Havisham seems to pity him. Despite his efforts, his romantic ideals may be impossible to preserve.
The story of Compeyson also highlights the theme of class differences that has run throughout the novel. Magwitch is a low-born orphan, but Compeyson is an educated man. He was a smooth one to talk, and was a dab at the ways of gentle-folks. Both Herbert and Wemmick are instrumental to the plot to rescue Magwitch. BIll barley is Magwitch's father and Joe's half brother. He was freinds with Miss havisham as a kid and played soccer with Compeyson.
Jaggers is his 3rd cousin and Wemmick is his son. Great Expectations was written by Charles Dickens in when he was 49 years old. In the beginning he is known to be about 7. Dickens was born in and wrote Great Expectationswhen he was 49, in Great Expectations opened when Pip was seven years old and followed him well into manhood.
At one point in the book, Pip says he turns "one-and-twenty" or 21 years old. Wemmick is between forty and fifty years old. Basketball great Bill Walton is 65 years old birthdate: November 5, Happiness is a theme in Great Expectations because when Pip does all the things he does for Estella, he is doing it because he thinks it will make him happy, but true happiness comes from those you love.
