I thought that it made a lot of sense sonically; I thought it was the one that was most fertile for me. So I made that album. The album is finished? I self-produced. I did have an engineer, and a friend who is also a producer, and they kind of both co-produced.
They did a really good job. Is it scary to step out on your own with lyric writing? Did you ever consider a stage name for the solo project? And had I known that we would have gotten somewhere, I probably would have changed my name. I always thought Stump was kind of like, you dropped something on your foot.
I remember I really liked the word Axon [for a stage name]. How conscious were those decisions? I started losing weight for health reasons.
I was in really bad shape, and you know, you get older, things start happening …. Wait, how old are you? I lost a lot of weight; I buckled down and worked out. All of a sudden you can try on good-looking stuff.
I really only bought shirts and ties and sports coats and stuff. Stump wanted to sing and write songs, and as Fall Out Boy developed, he became the yin to Wentz 's yang. Stump was responsible for the catchy melodies that supported Wentz 's personal lyrics, and his shy personality balanced out the attention-loving celebrity persona of his counterpart. Fall Out Boy issued five records between and , including two gold albums, one platinum release, and one multi-platinum smash From Under the Cork Tree.
While his bandmates launched side projects with other musicians -- Joe Trohman and Andy Hurley formed the Damned Things with a handful of collaborators, and Wentz teamed up with vocalist Bebe Rexha to form Black Cards -- Stump took the opposite approach, recording a solo album entirely by himself.
Playing every instrument and handling his own production duties, he explored a different style of music, one informed by the likes of Michael Jackson , Prince , and Justin Timberlake. I'm pretty much… I'm nobody again, and I love it. Stump says that he and his Fall Out Boy brethren -- Pete Wentz, Joe Trohman and Andy Hurley -- are great friends, but when they were at the height of their fame, "The stuff around us got to be so frustrating… and so much and so big that it became this behemoth following us around.
