Coastmasters was chartered 30 years ago by a Coast Guard Captain and a member of a local Alameda Toastmasters club. The Coastmasters meet on Coast Guard Island. It serves members who work there and live nearby.

Windmasters is a corporate club at the software company Wind River Systems. Fields is an author and the founder of Mrs. Fields Bakeries. She began her business in in Palo Alto. Her stores can now be found around the world. Notaro started his career in commercial real estate. Toastmasters International is one of the largest nonprofit communication and leadership organizations.

At club meetings members prepare speeches, which are then evaluated, proceeding into a session for impromptu speaking. Word spread and a couple of years later, a second club started in Anaheim, before establishing in other cities around Southern California. Toastmasters founder, Ralph C Smedley.

Up to then, all the instructions on running meetings, and general guidelines on public speaking was passed on by Smedley verbally. As interest came from further afield, those guidelines and advice were communicated in the form of personal letters, and Smedley soon realised that this was not practical. Then saw the first club started outside of the USA, in British Columbia, Canada and three years later was the first speech contest. Looking closer to home, was a very important year in the Irish Toastmasters history book as it saw the formation of the first Toastmasters club in Ireland — Dublin Toastmasters.
